The first room of the open day

At the end of November 2025 Nimeto held its open days, and the Immersive Applications programme showed its own space to visitors. I made the entrance: the room you walk into first, where you leave the school corridor behind and step into the sky. From there, visitors walked on to the other installations of the programme.

Above you, clouds drift slowly across a canvas stretched over the truss. Below you, the floor shows the same sky from above: a layer of cloud that opens now and then to reveal streets, rooftops and sports fields far below. You stand between the two, as if you are floating.

How it works

It is a double projection: two surfaces, each with its own video layer. One projector covers the canvas overhead, the other a rectangle of floor. Both surfaces are hit at an angle, so in TouchDesigner I warp and crop each output until the image sits exactly on its surface. Both layers play from the same network, so ceiling and floor move as one space.

Making the clouds

I built the clouds in Blender and animated them drifting slowly. I rendered two views of the same sky: one looking up, for the ceiling, and one looking down through the clouds onto the ground, for the floor. The drift had to feel calm, yet be visible the moment you step through the door.

Then I built the playback in TouchDesigner: loading the renders, mapping each one to its surface and adjusting on location until the edges lined up with the canvas and the floor.

What I learned

The entrance gave the open day a calm, large first impression before visitors reached any screen or headset. It taught me to treat a room as one image instead of separate screens, and to plan a render around where the projector hangs.
