A slide of red notes, in a large hall

Why I made it

I made Sticky Clash for my school's open day. I wanted something visitors could actually touch that still had to do with projection, so the idea was to mix something physical with something on a screen.

What it is

Sticky Clash is a video game that's projected onto a wall. Balls of light fall from the top, and the goal is to get them into a box. You do that by sticking things on the wall, and paper works best. A webcam sees what you've put up and the balls bounce off it, so piece by piece you build a path down to the box. You can keep changing the path while you play.

The colours matter too. Red paper works like a trampoline, green gives the balls a push, and blue is a wall that breaks after a few hits.

It's interactive, so you can't just stand there and watch. You really have to do something, and that makes it a bit exciting.

You can set it up almost anywhere, as long as you have a projector, a webcam and a laptop, and it works best in a fairly dark room. So far I've played it in a classroom, in a big hall and on my living room wall.

How I made it

I just started building, and the first version wasn't very good. You can still see that in the videos: the outline around the paper wasn't accurate yet and it kept shifting a little. I kept testing and fixing things, and the more I tested, the better it got. In the end it worked really well.

Free on GitHub

I put the game on GitHub for free so anyone can use it. You wouldn't make much money from something like this anyway, and it's nice to give something back to the community.

Get the game

Pick how you want to play it. The game speaks English and Dutch, and anyone may use, change and share it under the MIT license:

Play it now in your browser: nothing to install. Use a projector and a webcam, just a webcam, or simply your mouse or finger.

Download the game for free (ZIP): unzip the folder and double-click sticky-clash.html to start. It also works without internet.

View the code on GitHub: change it, build on it and share it.
